7.50 (good) innovative. having an non "realistic" character in the anime universe made this anime rather realistic. our main is an AI surviving on information on the net. this concept is very advanced back at that time. however, apart from this theme, not sure what the underlying message was or was there one at all?

7.50 (good) we've seen gods, demons, wolf man etc, mermaid is the first in this anime. great characters concept but lack a bit further development. ending of story did not feel complete. shame.

8.00 (good) innovative but ending ... is that the ending? it began strongly with a purpose and a theme. we saw the characters grow up and shared some of their past and dilemma but we didn't see a complete end at the end. the characters how they came about and their purpose of existence were not addressed. felt a bit frustrating. ovas gave us insight into the lighter side of characters about their school life.

8.50 (very good) interesting perspective of vampire. characters' relationships complex but story layout allows us to explore their complexity through the eyes of our main male lead. seiyuu strong performance. felt however, more characters could be developed in the span of anime.

9.75 (excellent) simply great. just as i thought i knew how the story would end, it turned up to be with a twist. yet everything felt so reasonable and coherent. characters idea pretty good, god, demon, human, and somewhat in between all living under one sky. this also created a trend thereafter. especially love that each character had a darker side which eventually came through and how they overcame their greatest fear. the fact that our main male lead also was a part of the darker history made it all more dramatic.

8.75 (very good) great storyline. although twelve plus one female characters against two male, most time one is a bit too much. considering its h-game origin, acceptable range, just. the housekeeper provided most comic relief. sisters idea created a trend to follow. it became a fashion almost that lots of anime that follow feature at least one sister character. characters in this anime are definitely cute and kawaii. what did the main male lead do to deserve all these attention from them?

8.00 (good) manga in everyway much better than anime. the smooth flow of action and characters' movement are so alive on paper. artworks for anime a bit on the downside. felt they were on a budget. songs are good though, matching tone and context. no particular seiyuu gave impressive performance. the ending for manga is much much more impressive and memory lasting than anime counterpart.

8.25 (good) great artworks, great characters, great development both for characters and story. the color and tone adopted by artist made this anime particularly soothing to watch. highly appreciate the way the main leads' view of the world that shape us. with or without magical power, we come to appreciate what we have, how we grief and handles emotion.

9.50 (excellent) Female lead looks all familiar though. Fan service is great, have to admit. Second season equally great. some say the fan services are overrated but i think they are great because of the story setting. our male lead is ecchi to the point of hentai and he didn't try to hide nor he's shameful. in fact, he's so shameless that maybe many of us (guys i refer) share some aspects of him deep inside us. at some stage of the anime, we must have envied even being jealous of him. looking forward to its ova. can't wait.

9.25 (very good) innovative topic for an animation. a story about economics, foregin currency and trading. unlike mainstream anime topics, this one is a nice break from all the usual drama. yet, with such a sophisicated topic demands some specific field of knowledge rendering it hard to comprehend at times. storyline surrounds the main male lead, felt a bit unbalance since there's minimal involvement from the female characters. relationships between two mains are a highlight. how they are prepared to overcome human-god boundary, such a topic has similarily been addressed in Ah My Goddess! Nicely done.

8.50 (very good) as always: good artworks, good flow and a complete story. but envirnomental message did not come out as strong as previous works. some said it's stronger but i felt otherwise. maybe the bit about bathing the river god is strong, but other parts of story, no, just don't feel its presence.

7.50 (good) one of first batch of animes watched. quality of anime very advance in its time. even today's standard, still high. overall story tense and worthwhile every minute. strong enemies vs. strong main characters. shortcoming maybe no female leads leaving whole anime as masculine. all about power and fighting.

7.50 (good) first few anime I watched. story still good. characters' development throughout great. ship named yamamoto is symbolic for the Jap. it retains their war era fighting spirit in this anime. glad to see them rid of the shadow from then onwards.

7.75 (good) story progresses slower than thought. central topic about time travel has always fascinate me. seiyuu hanazawa-san noticeable performance. with story unfolds each week, more is reveal and more explanation on those dates and time presented in black&white. Events in plot all pretty much interlink and related. Good job. had high expectation of this anime but disappointed in the middle but picked up the passion again towards end.

Strawberry Panic!

8.50 (very good) another animation on a taboo topic. lots of characters but clear theme throughout. unlike other anime with similar number of complex relationships, this one is easy to follow thanks to it fully utilising two seasons. characters were developed, explained and we are able to share their growing up. comparing this to maria-sama, same taboo topic about homosexuality, maria-sama only touches on the topic. strawberry panic is more explicit in its view on that.

6.00 (average) theme about gamble. i think this is first in many ways. but then it's not really about gambling. too untrue in how characters play games. apart from main character, other characters seem very little use for story. at least should have more insights about the two main characters' growing up, showing us their relationships in a bitter-love bonds. wanted to see more development in characters.that gamble society police samuri is really cute.

6.75 (above average) storyline old fashion but overall good for entertainment. many characters one theme. many female characters surrounding our lucky main lead. unfortunately for these female characters, story did not develop their individual stories to their max. with such a long span of episodes, should have given more insights. theme story rather old fashioned and predictable rendering it a bit boring. seiyuu performance saved this anime from bad to average. credits go to them.

7.50 (good) used to be great and entertaining yet since when has the storyline dragged on and on and on? it's all a bit too much. even dragon ball had an ending. characters great at its time. different from any previous. plot is rather new, again at its time. it did open up a series of similar stories and production afterwards. created a trend.

8.00 (good) fan service great, ending ... O_o
manga is much better in every sense yet i never get to read the ending bit. just stopped publishing all a sudden. by comparing the stages of progress of manga and anime though, manga is consistent with the theme and running problems of characters. it's gave more insights and development into characters and how events changed or shaped characters. manga artistics level is very high. can even feel the action movement from paper.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi

Last Updated: Apr 22, 2011

8.00 (good) two seasons and a few spin-offs. season 1 ended abruptly must say. characters are developed, happy to see their relationships deepen as we watched. season 2 is genious as it tried to express the point of views from yui the everyday boring life of recording and from haruhi the eccentric nature in her by shuffling all the episodes in disorder. a bit confusing yes. but able to trace their timeline as each episode hinted their time of existence. seiyuu great performance, even the side-kicks.

8.75 (very good) great graphics. great songs. great sound effects. not so great the plot, elements of story sounds a bit weird to me. seiyuu just a bit off for characters. guess production team wanted to keep costs to minimum as afterall this is an almost one-man production. highly praised his solo effort in creating this. the artistics quality of his work probably will remain high in many years to come.

8.25 (good) not bad for the story, interesting "ability" for the characters especially our main leads. Story lingering on a bit too much at times. condensing it should add to more dramatic atmosphere. would like to see how story continues and unfolds. probably a season 3 later on given the light novel development. seiyuu cast every stronger but seems to lack development in characters beside our main leads. the fact that what kind of power is hidden with our main male lead remains a mystery. eager to see what it is.

7.75 (good) not bad but can be better. main male an insensitive, useless and normal guy. consider it used to be a h-game, not surprise with soooo many choices in female characters in story. some are better developed, some aren't. bit disappointed. well, at least their seiyuu injected life into the characters with their voices. i reckon playing the h-game itself would give a better understanding of all characters.

8.50 (very good) season 1 visually pleasing. season 2 contains more fan services. great stuff. strong seiyuu cast backs up characters. female characters' artworks are some of the best among recent anime history. artist's skills is impressive, showing even higher level of details than his previous works, namely black cat. having introduced aliens characters into the story, the whole plot lights up with funny moments which unlike other stories using similar background, these aliens characters are given higher IQ and common sense. making it realistic and easier to accept. downside for me is there's just a little too many females. there maybe a season 3 as current manga is continuing.

7.00 (above average) interesting plot at its time until much more entertaining and funny anime comes along these days. similar stories involving younger characters in age seems to fit better with the running gags and themes. guess society wasn't ready for having much underage characters back in 2008. short stories in each episode all involving bits and pieces of silly things we might have done ourselves back in school. at least, i know i had. seiyuu performance uneven i must say. some better than others. appears some voices did not life the characters they were voicing.

9.25 (very good) Season 1 is absoluately eye-opening. So the Japanese does know how to kuso their own historic figures. Their society and traditional culture limited their anime topics until this comes along. It's a challenge to what's widely accepted as boring, unexciting and dull history. It demonstrated that history can be fun and colorful. Although each episode lasts about a minute in average, it brings out the best known characteristics of historic shougans and rulers. Season 2 continues the practice and doesn't disappoint.

9.00 (very good) better than expected. not your average love story. main three female seiyuu very solid and strong performance, much life and insights were expressed in their artistic use of voice. allowing us to relate to the characters and their hardship they faced in story. our main male lead isn't any typical useless character, which is always a delighted sign of great story. his appearance maybe deceptive as his inner beauty shines and glows. the second male lead is equally important as story evolves. both male characters plus the three female interaction made a classic topic into a brilliant love story.

5.75 (average) after watching, really wonder what's all that about? after a bit more research about the story, i'm still dumb-founded. what's the whole point in having a war because of libraries collection? what's all the fuss about? is that something worth fighting for or against? or is that the very thing that the story trying to address - that we spent too much effort and time on worthless area? i seem to have missed a very important and large piece in the story. or, maybe i just lack imagination.

9.25 (very good) great cinemactic effect, innovative way of unfolding story from the end. but, seems to me the whole story is revealed back to front. ie. the last episode should be the first episode, the second last is the second etc. from the original order, it doesn't make much sense. each episode appears to be inconsistent with the next. all we get to know about are the characters and their characteristics but hard to establish their relationships. i watched again back to front, which made much more sense. songs are great. quality of artwork superb.

8.75 (very good) spectacular story. i mean vampire story ain't new but this one deserves much more credit and attention. first, seiyuu cast strong and all very solid and well voiced. characters' goods and bads came out from their voices. second, lots of characters but each rather well introduced, expressed, developed and given an indication about each end. third, relationships are interrelated and interacted. overall a very impressive story.
